Press Release from Herefordshire Council:
Herefordshire Council and its waste and recycling partner FCC Environment have announced the winners of a very special competition for primary school pupils to name the new fleet of 28 recycling and waste collections lorries.
The fleet includes two brand new, state of the art eCollect all-electric Collection Vehicles that are in action to collect our recyclable material and help us all to be more ‘clued up’ about what we can recycle from home.
Cllr Elissa Swinglehurst, Cabinet Member Environment, said: “We are delighted to have been able to ask primary school children from across the county to help us name our amazing new recycling and waste collection lorries. It was a great opportunity for our young people to think creatively over the Easter holidays as well as giving us all a chance to get ‘clued up’ about what we can all recycle from home.”

The competition was open to the following age groups: 3 to 5 years, 6 to 7 years, 8 to 11 years and all entrants had to do was come up with a cracking creative name for one or more lorry. The winners were:

Each successful entrant was invited to attend the FCC Environment depot in Hereford on Monday 28 April to meet some of the lorries in person and meet with some of the great men and women who look after, manage, drive and collect our recycling and waste in them. Entrants got to go in the lorries, have their picture taken with their winning name and get their own competition winner certificate to take home.

Lorna, aged 9, chose the name Dan for her lorry because “I have been waving at Dan and the crew every week for 5 years. I love how friendly they are and I have enjoyed meeting them here today in ‘Dan’ the lorry.”
FCC Environment will also donate two apple trees to each school that took part.
