At midday today, a protest will be taking place near Hereford Cathedral. The protest has been organised by Extinction Rebellion Marches and the aim of the protest is to show opposition to The Police and Crime Bill that is currently going through Parliament.

XR Hereford say that they ‘will not be silenced’ and that they don’t support the ‘anti protest bill’.

Hundreds are expected to take part in the protest, with the vast majority from Herefordshire, but a number of people are expected to travel from other areas of the region to take part.

The organisers say that the protest will be peaceful and have advised those attending to remain socially distant in groups of six.

West Mercia Police have told Your Herefordshire that they have been informed about the protest.

Herefordshire Local Policing Commander, Superintendent Edd Williams, said: “We’re aware of a small planned protest due to take place in Hereford tomorrow afternoon and have liaised with the organisers who have advised they intend to hold a peaceful protest without causing any significant disruption to the wider community.

“We recognise the right to peaceful protest and will look to facilitate this, whilst being mindful of the current Covid-19 restrictions and the impact that COVID-19 continues to have on our day to day activities.”

Can protests legally take place now?

Yes protests can legally take place but organisers are expected to ensure that those attending remain socially distanced and peaceful. The change in the rules came into place on 29th March.

Why will Your Herefordshire be covering the protest?

In these situations, we often get asked, why are you covering these protests? In truth, we are simply a news outlet. We cover news from all angles and beliefs. Just because we decide to cover a protest or a piece of news, it doesn’t mean that Your Herefordshire is supporting or endorsing it, we are simply covering it to inform people that it is occurring and then the audience can make up their own minds based on what they’ve seen.

Our reporters will wear a mask at all times and will remain socially distanced from any crowds of people.

To be transparent, none of the Your Herefordshire team will be taking part in today’s protest and none of the team have taken part in any protests that have taken place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, we respect the right to protest and acknowledge the positive change that protests over the years have brought to the United Kingdom but ask that all those attending today remain peaceful and respectful of the wider community. We remain in a pandemic and public safety and the safety of our whole community should remain the priority.
