Eleven year old Bertie Price-Milne was injured today on Whitecross Road in Hereford. He slipped on the ice on Thursday morning and sustained a facial injury.

His mother Alice told Your Herefordshire:

“Bertie has possibly broken his nose, his face is severely swollen and has huge bruising on his forehead, plus grazes to his lips and nose.

“I was planning on going to the gym this morning, but I then heard about Bertie’s accident. I ran from Moor Street all the way to near the garage on Whitecross Road. I was absolutely hysterical and so upset.”

Alice continued:

“I plead with the council to grit the pavements. It was Tuesday morning that the snow arrived and the temperatures have stayed cold.

“There are plenty of streets in the city that haven’t had sufficient sunlight to thaw it all out, and without grit on the pavements it’s like walking on an ice rink.”

Alice would like to give credit to the emergency services that were brilliant at dealing with Bertie’s injury.

“One of the Dad’s called David helped and a teacher from Lord Scudamore School was nearby when the fall happened.

“The ambulance crew were brilliant, despite Bertie being in a bad way the crew calmed him down and made him laugh. They even made him an inflatable elephant (pictured).

“We need pavements to be fully gritted on main roads, as I dread to think what could’ve happened if he had fallen on the back of his head and been more severely injured.”

The weather will remain cold on Friday, but Storm Bert will bring milder weather to Herefordshire over the weekend which will thaw the snow and ice.

The Met Office have issued a weather warning for Herefordshire, with rain causing flooding problems.
