Volunteers at Hay Riverside parkrun are celebrating the 6 month anniversary of their very first parkrun this weekend.

Hay Riverside Walk parkrun was started by members of the local running club; Hay Hotfooters who meet regularly to enjoy running in the beautiful countryside of Powys and Herefordshire. Like parkrun, Hay Hotfooters Running Club welcomes runners of all abilities.

The first Hay parkrun took place in October last year with the kind permission of the Warren Trust and Hay Town Council who have granted the use of their land without which the run would not be able to take place.

Every Saturday morning at 9am, weather and ground conditions permitting, between 50 and 120 parkrunners run, jog or walk a 5K course along the beautiful River Wye.

parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event in which everyone is encouraged to walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate.

The event is not a race. Whilst everyone who completes the course receives a finishing time, entrants are encouraged to take part for their own enjoyment and participate at their own pace.

Joining the parkrun is free but you need to register before you first come along; to register, please visit the registration pages of the parkrun website.

You only need to register with parkrun once – and don’t forget to bring a scannable copy of your barcode to each event. If you have mislaid your barcode you can request a reminder. Without your barcode you can run but you won’t be recorded with a time.

Local personality Alan Harrhy regularly volunteers to run/walk the Hay Tail-Walker role; a post designed to assist with those participants at the rear of the field. Alan is in his 80s and is a big part of the Hay parkrun experience.

Like most events of this nature Hay parkrun is very reliant on volunteers to make it a success. If you are interested in giving an hour of your time on a Saturday morning please contact the parkrun organisers at  riversidewalk@parkrun.com. We would be delighted to hear from you.

The event takes place at Riverside Walk, under Wye Hay Bridge, Bridge Street, Hay-on-Wye, Powys, HR3 5DE (w3w: ///bonfires.list.trying)
