COVID-19 infections in South Wales are continuing to cause significant concern.

Yesterday, 2021 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Wales, with the NHS said to be under ‘considerable’ and ‘sustained’ pressure in many areas.

The rise in cases in Wales comes as just over the border, here in Herefordshire, we’ve seen a dramatic fall in cases, with Herefordshire’s COVID-19 infection rate now down to 60.7 cases per 100,000 population. This is far lower than the 258 cases per 100,000 population figure in Monmouthshire and 369.2 cases per 100,000 population in Newport.

High infection rates in Wales are likely to mean that English counties on the border with Wales are unlikely to see their restrictions eased on 16th December, when the government next updates the tier system.

In yesterday’s COVID-19 briefing, Vaughan Gething refused to rule out another firebreak lockdown with the situation in Wales described as ‘very serious’ with the NHS under ‘considerable’ pressure in many parts of the country.
