Hereford residents are being warned by the Environment Agency to be prepared for possible flooding, with levels on the River Wye responding to heavy rain in Mid Wales.

A peak of around 4.3-4.8 metres is expected in Hereford overnight Saturday, into the early hours of Sunday morning, with a further update expected later today. 

Some parts of Wales have seen over four inches of rain over recent days. 

In an update released this morning, the Environment Agency said:

“River levels are forecast to rise at the Old Wye Bridge river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is expected between 09:00 and 16:00 today, 07/01/23. 

“We expect flooding to affect low lying land and roads along the River Wye from Hay on Wye to Ross on Wye. Other locations that may be affected include the A438, Byford, Bredwardine and Hereford. 

“The footpath on the North River bank in Hereford and King Georges playing fields start to flood. 

“Predicted peaks:- Hay on Wye 3.0m to 3.3m evening of 07/01, Bredwardine 4.7m to 5.2m overnight Saturday, Belmont 4.7m to 5.2m overnight Saturday, Old Wye Bridge 4.3m to 4.8m overnight Saturday, Mordiford 4.4m to 4.9m Sunday morning, Ross on Wye 3.7m to 4.0m Sunday morning Further rainfall is forecast over the next 12 hours. 

“We expect river levels to remain high until 09/01/23. We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are clearing weed screens. 

“Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses. This message will be updated as the situation changes.”
