Anglers from all over the UK will descend on Hereford this week to take part in the annual 3 Day Autumn Angling Festival on the River Wye.

The event, now in its 16th year takes place between the Victoria Foot bridge, upstream as far as Breinton. The match length is split into sub sections where competitors battle it out for the highest accumulative weight, to score points.

The coarse fishing in The Wye valley continues to defy the odds. Despite the many problems the river faces, the fish have exploded in numbers. The 2021 festival saw records tumbling with just over 7000 pounds of fish weighed in over 3 days. And this year looks to be equally as good with recent individual match catches up to 110lbs.

Event organiser Dave Roberts said:

“This event is one of the hottest tickets in match angling. The event sold out on the first day of launch. We attract the very best anglers in the Uk and the Influx of visitors is a welcome tourism boost to the local shops, hotels, pubs and restaurants, at what is generally a quiet time of year.

“The variety of coarse fish in the town centre during the colder months mean we have the best winter fishing in the country. People travel from all over to experience it.

“The variety also means many different tactics and skills are required to be successful. This is why we attract the very best in the business.”

The Autumn Festival runs from November 9-11 in partnership with the Hereford RFC who host the event. The Club is open for breakfast from 7-8.30am and after match refreshments from 4pm onwards.
