West Mercia Police officers have confirmed that an E-scooter will be destroyed after officers discovered a person riding it on the road.

The incident occurred in Malvern, and officers say that the scooter will now be destroyed due to it remaining illegal to ride an E-scooter in the area.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said:

“This E-scooter was seen being ridden around the Elgar Avenue area of Malvern by police officers this afternoon.

“The rider had already been warned on a previous occasion about riding the E-scooter on the public road and had been told that E-scooters are classed as mechanically propelled vehicles and are not legally allowed to be ridden on the roads in Malvern and would be seized if he was seen on it again.

“The rider ignored this warning and so when he spotted the police officers while riding his E-scooter around Elgar Avenue in Malvern, he tried to ride away from police.

“The two officers were on push bikes and chased the rider. When they caught up with him, the E-scooter was seized.

“The E-scooter will now be destroyed as it is a mechanically propelled vehicle being used on the road without insurance.

“The difference between an E-scooter and an E-bike is that E-bike motors only work whilst the pedals are being turned by the rider. If the rider stops pedalling then the motor also stops.

“On an E-scooter, the motor propels the scooter without any pedalling. These scooters are legal in some towns where they have spacific bi-laws in place to allow their ussage.

“Malvern is not one of those towns, so you risk having your E-scooter seized and destroyed if you are caught riding it around Malvern.”
