A Parish Council is demanding immediate action to bring the end to illegal tipping on a site near a village.
In a recent letter, Highnam Parish Council, located near Gloucester, said:
“Highnam Parish Council calls upon the Environment Agency to take immediate legal action to bring about a cessation of long standing illegal tipping on a site at the rear of Over Farm off the A40.
“The Parish Council first alerted the agency to this activity well over five years ago and has been regularly lobbying the agency ever since to take effective action.
“Despite assurances that the matter is now with the Environment Agency’s legal team to determine the best course of action, nothing has happened.
“In the meantime the extent of tipping has been significantly increasing totally unabated.
“Fleets of lorries deposit rubble and noxious material at the site on a daily basis, spoiling the countryside and causing immense damage to the environment. It also destroys vegetation and encroaches onto the nearby Gloucestershire and Herefordshire Canal.
“It is endangering the lives of members of the public both walking and cycling along the adjoining roadway.
“Such was the extent of burning from the site, that on 11th June, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service were called out and local residents advised to close their windows.
“The Parish Council’s patience has run out.
“We demand immediate action is taken by the Environment Agency and where appropriate with Tewkesbury Borough Council and Gloucestershire County Council.”
