There is positive news for a Hereford school that has been plagued with flooding issues over recent years.

Holmer Primary School, on Holmer Road in Hereford, has been flooded several times over recent years, with staff working hard to minimise the disruption caused to pupils learning.

In an update shared to parents in May, Headteacher Jayne Maund said:

“I am pleased to update you on the progress we have made regarding the flood protection measures for our school.

“Over the past few months, we have been working in close partnership with the Department for Education (DfE), and I am pleased to confirm that funding has now been secured.

“As a result, we are in a position to begin the first phase of work to address the ongoing flooding issues.

The initial phase will involve the following:

• Construction of a flood wall surrounding the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) area

• Installation of additional flood barriers

• Enhancement of the drainage system across the school site

“Once completed, these improvements are expected to provide significant protection for our school buildings and prevent further damage to the EYFS area. We will continue to collaborate with the DfE and Herefordshire Council to explore and implement further long-term solutions to prevent floodwater from entering the school grounds.

“Construction of the flood wall is scheduled to begin on Monday 19th May and is expected to last approximately four weeks. During this period, the Leisure Centre Gate will be temporarily closed, and a section of the field will be fenced off to allow for safe working conditions.

“Additionally, there will be a brief period during the works when the EYFS gate will also need to be closed. I will keep you informed and provide advance notice once those dates are confirmed.

“We are delighted to have secured the necessary funding and to be taking a positive step towards resolving the flooding challenges. We anticipate only minimal disruption to school routines and greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as the work is carried out.

“Thank you, as always, for your continued support and cooperation.”
