A major search was launched on Monday evening in Hereford, after a man entered the River Wye.

West Mercia Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service and Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service all attended the incident. 

Members of the public reported seeing a significant presence of emergency services near Greyfriars Bridge and the Victoria Bridge.

A spokesperson for Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service told Your Herefordshire:

“A Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crew from Hereford Fire Station plus boat crews from Hereford and Worcester, along with the Fire Service drone from Ledbury, were called to a rescue from water at the Victoria Bridge, Hereford at 17:07 on 19 February. 

“A hasty search was carried out by crews on the bankside. 

“A man in his 40s had self-rescued from the water after entering at Greyfriars Bridge. 

“He was checked over by the ambulance service and taken into police custody.

“The incident was marked as pending closure at 17:50.”
