A dangerous driver whose actions resulted in the death of a woman and left her daughter seriously injured has been sentenced to eight years and eight months.

Anayat Ur-Rehman, 26, of Holcombe Road, Birmingham, pled guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on Friday (12 September).

Ur-Rehman (pictured) was driving a VW Passat on Saturday 19 October 2024 on the A456 Hagley causeway when the fatal incident took place around 1.15pm.

He undertook a Ford Fiesta driving in excess of the speed limit and in in doing so collided with the rear offside of Fiesta.

This caused the Fiesta to cross the central reservation where it struck and Audi E-tron, killing the driver Abigial Hudson instantly and seriously injuring her youngest daughter, who was aged ten at the time.

At the time of the collision, Abigail was driving her two daughters and her husband, Ryan Hudson, to an open day while Ur-Rehman and three passengers in his car had been travelling from Kidderminster to Birmingham.

Ur-Rehman’s highly dangerous manoeuvre caused a five-car collision which saw the Fiesta become airborne and flip over the grass central reservation of the dual carriageway before colliding with Abigail’s Audi that was travelling in the opposite direction.

He was sentenced to eight years and eight months for the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and three years for causing serious injury by dangerous driving to run concurrently, and he was banned from driving for nine years.

The younger daughter suffered “catastrophic injuries” in the crash, including a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain and faces more operations in the future and a lifetime of taking medication.

Writing in a victim impact statement, Mr Hudson said his entire world was shattered when his wife, Abigail, was tragically taken from them in an avoidable car crash.

“Her death has left a permanent void in our lives, and no words can truly capture the weight of that loss,” he wrote.

“Since that day, our future – the one we had built together and looked forward to – has been stolen from us.

“Our children’s lives have been irreversibly altered. Our youngest suffered catastrophic injuries in the crash. She now must take medication for the rest of her life, and the scars on her face will forever serve as a daily reminder of what happened.

“The hardest part of all is knowing everything Abbi will miss. She won’t see her daughters grow up. She won’t be there for their proms, their graduations, or to see them fall in love.

“She won’t be there on their wedding days or to hold her grandchildren. She won’t be there to celebrate another anniversary with me or grow old with me as we had always planned. Every single one of those moments that should have been filled with joy will instead be marked with sadness because Abbi won’t be there.”

DC Joe Curry, of West Mercia’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit South, said: “We welcome the sentencing of Ur-Rehman whose dangerous actions and appalling driving have ultimately taken the life of a mother and seriously injured her daughter while destroying a family.

“No sentence will ever replace Abigail, but we hope this is one step in them rebuilding their lives and goes some way to seeing justice done.

“Ur-Rehman showed a total disregard for the safety of the other road users on that day, and we hope the tragic outcome will teach a sobering lesson about the reason for speed limits and driving regulations to anyone thinking of driving in such a thoughtless and selfish manner putting so many people at risk as he did.”
