Staff, pupils and families at St Thomas’ are celebrating after Ofsted visited to judge the school’s approach to learning during lockdown. Inspectors spent time with all members of staff, observed reading and spoke with a group of children before concluding that, ‘leaders and those responsible for governance are taking effective action to provide education in the current circumstances.’
The inspectors went on to praise the school’s curriculum, including reading and learning for children with special educational needs. Leaders shared the school’s innovative curriculum approach, its links with the community including those with the Hereford Cathedral and NMITE as well as the impressive outdoor provision at the school. Inspectors learnt about development of the nursery and reception classes at St Thomas as well as future plans for expanding provision for babies.
‘Leaders’ effectiveness is improving at all levels,’ the inspectors reported. Mrs Claire McKeown, head teacher at St Thomas said, ‘We are proud that St Thomas gives children a great start in life. Everyone who comes here knows that it is a school with a special history and a bright future. It is wonderful to see this recognised by Ofsted but even more wonderful to hear the sound of children playing and laughing in the sunshine now that we are all back in school.’
Inspectors went on to say that, ’pupils welcome feedback they get from teachers,’ and that ‘pupils reading skills continue to be monitored through a daily structured reading and phonics programme.’ The school welcomes the inspectors’ judgements and the recognition placed on the importance of reading and of pupils wanting to learn. St Thomas will continue to develop its curriculum so that the creative work already completed can be enjoyed and established over time.
