A £2 million extension of a popular retirement housing scheme for older people in the centre of Hereford is nearingcompletion.

Railway Housing Association is adding an additional 14homes to Great Western Court housing scheme in Canonmoor Court.

When completed within the next four months, it will increase the number of apartments at Great Western Court to 44, providing more accommodation for rent in the town for people aged 60 and over.

The extension is linked to the existing scheme (built in 1986)and will result in 12, one-bedroom apartments; and another two apartments are being built within the existing building.

In addition, the communal residents’ lounge is being significantly increased in size to provide more space for the various activities which take place at Great Western Court.

It will also provide a larger entrance area, new bicycle/scooter store, additional parking, landscaping, and sprinkler system.

Matt Sugden, Railway Housing Association Chief Executive, said: “There is a need for more older person’s accommodation in Hereford and the extension of Great Western Court will help to meet the ever-growing demand in the area.

“The new apartments are perfect for people needing to movebecause their current home no longer meets their needs, due to factors such as mobility issues.

“It enables people to remain living independently in an easy-to-manage home, with an onsite scheme manager, and at the same time it could help to free up larger family homes in the town.

“Great Western Court is a real community hub with a wide range of social activities for residents and local people, so we are delighted to be able to offer even more people the chance to live here.”

Railway Housing Association is investing over £2 million in the extension, which includes funding of £600,000 from Homes England.

The new homes will all be let at below market rents to people aged 60 and over. People can register their interest or find out more information by calling 01432 275660 to speak with Hilary Lewis (Scheme Manager) or email her at HLewis@railwayha.co.uk
