The United Kingdom has recorded a record 106,122 new cases of COVID-19, the highest daily number of cases recorded since the start of the pandemic.
It means that a total of 643,219 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the United Kingdom in the past seven days. This is an increase of 58.9% on the previous seven day period.
However it’s not all bad news, with cases in Herefordshire remaining relatively low, with 140 new cases recorded today in the county. The COVID-19 infection rate in Herefordshire remains one of the lowest in the country, with the infection rate for the seven day period ending 17th December being 390.5 cases per 100,000 population.
The figures released today will add extra pressure to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to increase restrictions in England, with both Nicola Sturgeon (Scotland First Minister) and Mark Drakeford (Wales First Minister) announcing further measures that will come into place after Christmas to slow the spread of the virus.
More soon.
