It’s the first day back to work and school for many people this morning, but there is plenty of disruption due to heavy overnight rain and snow melt causing plenty of flooding issues across the county.

School Closures:

Fairfield High School – Due to severe flooding in and around Peterchurch, the school will be closed today. Today is an Inset Day, so we are only closed for staff. We hope to be open again as usual on Tuesday 7th January in time for the students’ return to school.

Holmer Primary School – Closed due to flooding this morning.

Road Closures:

The A49 is currently closed in both directions between Leominster (OK Diner) and the junction for Stockton due to flooding.

The A438 Hereford to Ledbury Road is currently closed in both directions between Tarrington and Trumpet due to flooding near Alexander Park. 

A number of other routes have significant standing water / flooding. These include:

The A4103 (Hereford to Worcester Road) – flooding at Fromes Hill, Yarkhill and Bransford.

River Wye between Hay-on-Wye and Hereford:

‘River levels are rising at the Hay-On-Wye river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected from 04:00 today, 06/01/25. 

‘We expect flooding to affect properties and roads in and around Hay and Hereford areas including the A438 between Letton and Willersley and Whitney on Wye. 

‘Predicted peaks, Hay on Wye 3.4 to 3.8m on Monday morning 06/01/25, Bredwardine 5.7 to 6.0m on Monday morning, 06/01/25. 

‘Further rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours. 

‘We are closely monitoring the situation.’

River Frome – Bromyard & Bishops Frome:

“River levels have risen at the Bromyard river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. 

“Consequently, flooding of property is imminent. We expect flooding to affect Broad Bridge Station Trading Estate. 

“Further rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours.”

An icy start in places. Early rain and snow gradually clearing with drier and perhaps brighter spells for the afternoon, though scattered wintry showers continuing. Feeling cold in the brisk northwesterly wind. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Tonight:

Further wintry showers and icy stretches possible overnight, primarily across northern counties. Occasional clear spells in between these, under which a patchy rural frost is possible. Winds easing. Minimum temperature 0 °C.

Tuesday:

A brighter day overall with a good number of sunny spells. Scattered wintry showers tending to fade later as winds also ease. Cold, with a widespread frost overnight. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Remaining cold during the coming week with further overnight frosts. Cloudy on Wednesday but sunny spells emerging for Thursday. Rain possible later Friday.
