Sarah Bowring from Hereford has chronic lymphoedema following cancer surgery in 2011.

Lymphoedema is a long-term (chronic) condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues. It can affect any part of the body, but usually develops in the arms or legs.

It develops when the lymphatic system does not work properly. The lymphatic system is a network of channels and glands throughout the body that helps fight infection and remove excess fluid.

It’s important that lymphoedema is identified and treated as soon as possible. If it is not treated, it can get worse.

Since treatment, Sarah has had at least three episodes of cellulitis each year which is debilitating for Sarah and it is becoming increasingly worse following each episode and the only long term solution is now surgery which is not available on the NHS in England. The most frustrating thing for Sarah is that is she lived just a few miles across the border in Wales, the operation would be done on the NHS. How is it fair that such a treatment is decided by a postcode lottery? Surely patients in each corner of the United Kingdom should have access to the same quality of care?

Sarah is hoping to raise enough money to have the surgery done so that she can get on with life rather than being permanently on antibiotics and being constantly ill. Sarah is a positive person who is constantly looking to the future and after helping many friends and family members of her own in the past, she is now asking for something back.
