Kingsland CE Primary School is awarded prestigious School of Sanctuary award.

Kingsland CE Primary School is delighted to have been awarded the prestigious School of Sanctuary award – this is in recognition of its work and ongoing commitment to the City of Sanctuary vision of being a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

Throughout the year, the school has been working to develop its understanding of the plight of refugees and asylum seekers in order to provide a welcoming place of safety.

The project, led superbly by Deputy Headteacher Fiona Williams, culminated in enlightening work during the recent national Refugee Week.

Kingsland CE Primary School is the very first school in Herefordshire to be awarded School of Sanctuary status.

Feedback from the City of Sanctuary adjudicators stated: “A very sincere congratulations from everyone at City of Sanctuary UK for officially joining the School of Sanctuary network and being the very first in Herefordshire!

“Proactively ensuring new arrivals feel welcomed and taking responsibility for building a culture of understanding and empathy as a school has never been more important and I feel every confidence that your activities will have a tangible impact.”

Stewart Debenham, headteacher, said, “We are delighted to be recognised as a safe place of sanctuary for the most vulnerable people who are fleeing violence and persecution.

“The school is committed to providing a ‘rich and vibrant curriculum’ for all its children and this award illustrates perfectly the school vision of ‘Let your lights shine.”
