The RSPCA is launching an appeal for information after a Spaniel was found in a layby in a collapsed and emaciated state.

The 15-year-old male liver and white Spaniel was found on the Hereford/Worcester road – which is understood to be the A4103 – and was taken to a vets in Hereford. Sadly the dog was found in such a suffering state that he was put to sleep.

RSPCA Inspector Claire Davey said: “This is a very upsetting incident and we’d like to thank everyone involved ensuring this dog was taken to a vet after he was found.

“Unfortunately the microchip details were not up to date so we are unable to find out where he came from or what has happened. We also don’t know the exact location of where he was found, but understand it was on the A4103.

“The dog – who was clearly in a very poor state and was emaciated – was euthanised on welfare grounds. The police have now seized the body as evidence and we are making enquiries.

“Anyone who can help with first hand evidence about this dog is urged to call the RSPCA’s inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident – 01568411.”

When an animal is in need, the quicker they get help the better. There’s helpful advice on the RSPCA website about how to get help for animals as quickly as possible, and how to report cruelty and neglect to the charity’s specialist teams: rspca.org.uk/reportcruelty.

To help the RSPCA rescue animals from the worst cruelty, provide life-saving treatment, as well as  give them all the care and love they urgently need, the charity launched its Summer Cruelty Appeal this week which calls on the public to donate to the cause.

Summer should be a season of joy for animals. Long walks on golden evenings. Zoomies on the beach. Stretching out in the garden to soak up the sun. But there’s a side to summer you don’t see. For thousands of animals, it’s a season of pain, fear and suffering, when cruelty peaks. Support the RSPCA’s Summer Cruelty Appeal at: rspca.org.uk/endcruelty
