Health secretary Matt Hancock has told MPs that a “new variant” of the COVID-19 virus has been identified which might be associated with the fast spread in the southeast of England.

The health secretary said that the new variant of the virus is spreading faster and that over 1,000 cases have been identified so far, mainly in the South of England.

Matt Hancock added that it is unlikely that this new variant would affect the rollout of any current COVID-19 vaccine.
