Step into the past and discover what lies beneath at The Weir Garden, Herefordshire, during the Festival of Archaeology*. From 18 to 27 July, visitors can witness live excavations at a site with possible Roman origins, explore fascinating artefacts, and enjoy hands-on archaeologicalactivities in a stunning natural setting

This exciting dig builds on discoveries made by ITV’s Time Team in 2005 and a follow-up excavations in 2014. The dig came about after geophysical surveys were carried out as part of a wider project to restore over 65 hectares of wildlife habitat. These surveys ensured that habitat restoration could be carefully planned to protect and explore the site’s rich history.

Plus – don’t miss the special weekend of 26–27 July, when Hereford Museum on the Move rolls in with interactive exhibits celebrating Herefordshire’s Roman heritage. Enjoy a weekend packed with exciting archaeological activities and celebrations

Vivi Caroli, National Trust Archaeologist said “This is a wonderful opportunity to further our understanding of the site. The geophysical survey clearly confirmed the location of a rectangular enclosure first noted by aerial photography in the 1970s. With the help of volunteers, students, and community groups, we hope the dig will help us determine the character, importance, condition, and date of the site, while also providing field training and engagement opportunities.

Herefordshire is rich in history, heritage, and nature — we are really excited by the prospect of learning more about the local heritage and involving people in the process.”

Mark your calendars and enjoy a unique blend of nature, history, and discovery at The Weir Garden — no booking needed
