Nine year old Oscar from Herefordshire has raised over £700 for farming charity RABI in memory of his grandfather and best friend, Dennis. In recognition of Oscar’s outstanding achievement, RABI recently presented him with its Young Hero Award.
Oscar’s mum, Amy Price-Andrews was devastated when she lost her mum just days after her son’s first birthday. The support Amy and her family received from RABI during this difficult time is something she will never forget.
“It was traumatic losing mum, but RABI offered support and gave us some breathing space. My dad Dennis stepped in and became the perfect grandad and farming inspiration for young Oscar. They were best friends.”
Sadly, last year grandad Dennis passed away. Oscar, aged eight at the time, decided to do something extraordinary in his grandad’s memory. Setting himself a fundraising target of £200, he walked 30 miles in December, through driving rain and snow, and said, “Grandad can no longer walk the land, but I can, and will do it for him.”
And that’s what Oscar did, smashing his £200 target, raising over £700 and spreading awareness of RABI. The charity’s regional manager for the West Midlands, Kate Jones, recently attended assembly at Clifford Primary School, near Hardwicke to present the worthy winner with his special RABI Young Hero Award.
“Oscar had no idea we were surprising him, so his little face was complete shock,” says Kate.
“I think Oscar has inspired other children to fundraise as they were all asking me what they could do to get involved. I will bereturning to the school in October for a more in depth discussion about RABI’s services for rural farming communities.”
If you would like to find out more about RABI’s work, you can contact Kate directly at kate.jones@rabi.org.uk. She is happy to talk to schools and other organisations about the support RABI offers to farming people.
