In May 2021, Ian Rivers embarked on a solo unsupported row across the North Atlantic from New York to the Scilly Isles. Using only a sextant as the main form of navigation, this 3,100 nautical mile crossing is the ultimate test of human endurance, navigation and seamanship. Nobody has yet completed an unsupported solo from New York.
Ian is so close to completing this amazing feat, with Rowsentinal posting the following on Facebook yesterday:
“Ian Rivers ex SAS , who is rowing the longest distance across the Atlantic solo is not far from making it back home! He’s just encountered storms upon storms, capsized twice and is near to exhaustion. He needs our support to push him the last few hundred miles. Please get on board with this massive challenge and show your support for Ian and all the sponsors of rowsentinel.”
The row is designed to raise money for the Special Air Service Regimental Association (SASRA) and St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford, whilst also raising awareness of the mental health challenges facing serving and veteran personnel. He also personally funded the £25,000 purchase of the Rossiter Ocean 2 boat to ensure the venture took place.
