Le Voci Ladies choir from Hereford were delighted to win the equal voice competition at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod yesterday in Wales. 

The international eisteddfod features choirs from around the world and this category featured music written by a composer from the choirs native country.

Le Voci performed three pieces, “The Nightingale” by Thomas Weekes, “I Gave My Love a Cherry” arranged by Michael Neaum, and an original piece written especially for the choir by local composer Robert Peate “Drunken Sailor”, and were accompanied by Dane Preece. 

Le Voci is a female choir formed by director Jo Williamson, with many members having performed previously with Cantabile Girls choir at Hereford Cathedral School.

These ladies have gone on to varying careers around the country, but come back together regularly in Hereford to rehearse with other selected singers from the local community here in Hereford. 

Le Voci were placed first in our category with a score of 89 marks and were invited back for the evening concert where they represented England and competed for Choir of the World against Kemmerchor Manila from the Philipines, Delaware Choral Scholars from USA, and Cantilon Chamber Choir from Canada, with Choir of the World awarded ultimately to the Philippines.

Choir director Jo Williamson said “I am delighted and honoured to have been placed first at Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfodd in this international competition. The standard of singing today from all choirs has been outstanding  and a joy to watch. I am so proud of the ladies.”
