Hereford Cathedral is preparing to take a step back through time as Luxmuralis return with another spectacular light and sound show in January 2026.
Following on from the sell-out success of Space in 2024, which saw over seven thousand people visit the cathedral over four nights, the cathedral is delighted to announce that they will be hosting ‘Time’ in January 2026.
The light show will transform the interior of Hereford Cathedral and invite visitors to embark upon an extraordinary exploration of the concept of time as they journey through history, science and imagination.
The show which has been created by award-winning artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, made up of Peter Walker (sculptor) and David Harper (composer), features a host of immersive projected artworks.
Attendees will traverse wormholes, venture inside the workings of clocks, and experience a dramatic narrative that spans from the present day back to the very beginning of everything.
Luxmuralis, which means light murals in Latin, take their son-et-lumiere (sound and light) art to a variety of places and spaces, and has already attracted attention at many UK cathedrals, bringing thousands of new visitors and pilgrims through the doors of such sacred buildings.
The Very Revd Sarah Brown, Dean of Hereford, said: “I am very much looking forward to this exploration of time writ large all over the cathedral. Not only will it be an amazing event – those who explored Space with us in 2024 will doubtless remember how our wonderful cathedral was the perfect location for such a grand spectacle – but it opens our minds to some big questions: how God works within and outside of time, our place in time and how we use it, and the relationship of science and God. I can’t wait to see what Luxmuralis makes of all that – and to see the responses of tiny children and older heads alike to this extraordinary sensory spectacle!”
Peter Walker, Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, said: “We are delighted to be returning to Hereford Cathedral after such an overwhelming and fantastic response last year. It’s a real joy to be able to bring our brand-new light and sound installation, Time, to this magnificent setting. This show has been created for people of all ages to enjoy, and we look forward to sharing an immersive experience that celebrates both the beauty of the cathedral and the universal theme of time itself.”
Emma Maggs, Head of Development at Hereford Cathedral, said: “We were thrilled to work with many local business partners and funders last year to bring the first ever light show to Hereford. We are also pleased to have received £2600 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to support January’s light show. If you would be interested in supporting this exciting event, please do get in touch. It was wonderful to welcome so many new people to Herefordshire last year and we hope Time will help many more people discover the joys of visiting the city.”
Time will take place on Tuesday 20 – Saturday 24 January with tickets costing £9 for adults, £6 for children (4 – 16) and free tickets for children aged 3 and under.
There will be an early bird offer running throughout September with 10% off all tickets purchased.
Tickets will be available to purchase from Hereford Cathedral from Monday 1 September, more information can be found here – www.herefordcathedral.org/time
