Sunday saw the traditional curtain raiser for River Wye Match fishing season, with the Wye Charity Shield – Joe Burrows Memorial competition.
With the river dropping after a moderate rise in levels, travelling anglers didn’t know quite what to expect.
In the end, Chub were the dominant species which saw Tredegar Angler, Damien Scriven crowned Champion.
Drawn at peg number 54 just above the Canary Walk Bridge at Eign, he caught a whopping 55lbs of chub up to 3lbs using heavy weighted feeder tactics to keep control in the swollen river.
Runner up on the day was Litchfield visitor Brian Rigby who chose to concentrate on catching very small bleak.
Drawn at Broomy Hill, after 5 hours he’d amassed a busy 1440 of the little fish, to weigh 50lbs 4oz.
Finishing in 3rd place and agonisingly just 2oz behind second, was Welsh International angler, Lee Edwards.
Fishing opposite the Wye Inn at Bartonsham the Caerphilly angler caught chub and barbel, to weigh 50lb 2oz.
Well done to all who took part. A great match showing the Wye in good early season form, with multiple species being caught.
£720 was raised towards the Hereford and District Angling Association Charity fund, which has donated tens of thousands of pounds to Herefordshire causes over the last 40 years.
The next match is the River Wye Teams Championship this Sunday which looks set to be another classic!
