At a gala evening hosted at the British Film Institute on London’s South Bank a local composer Gavin Higgins won the prestigious Ivor Novello Classical Music award for Best Orchestral Composition for his Horn Concerto.
Described as “bejewelled” by broadcaster Tom Service, Higgins’ Horn Concerto was Premiered by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with the incredibly talented horn player Ben Goldscheider.
Gavin Higgins was born in The Forrest of Dean, Gloucestershire and studied French horn and
composition at Chetham’s School of Music, The Royal Northern College of Music, and the Royal
College of Music.
Described as ‘boldly imaginative’ by the Times, ‘a talent to watch’ by the New York Times and ‘one of the most interesting voices of his generation‘ by Limelight, Gavin Higgins is one of Britain’s most exciting and gifted compositional talents and is represented by Monmouth based Nimbus Music Publishing.
The Horn Concerto along with The Faerie Bride a cantata inspired by the Welsh myth of the Lady of Llyn y Fan Fach with libretto by Francesca Simon will be released for Streaming, download and on CD by Nimbus Records.
Ekstasis his debut album of chamber music, was released by Nimbus in 2019 to wide acclaim.
His next album, The Faerie Bride | Horn Concerto will be released by Nimbus on 7th February 2025.
Higgins can also be heard on radio, as a regular guest on Radio 4’s Add To Playlist and the host of
Everything Stops – a documentary about the relationship between Music and Tourette’s Syndrome.
Higgins is also an advocate for working-class voices in classical music and is a patron of the charity
Young Sounds UK.
