Herefordshire is a county full of talented young people, and JJ Denny is certainly one of them.
19-year-old JJ Denny from Hereford says that he first started making music in 2019.
At the start, he just used his phone at school to record music as a way to express the things he was going through.
JJ told Your Herefordshire that he has always had a love for music but it got to the point where listening to it wasn’t enough for him anymore, and he wanted to create.
At the time, JJ was simply using the Apple headphones you get when you purchase a phone, and he didn’t have a microphone, but that wasn’t going to stop him.
Everything changed for JJ during lockdown. He told us that he already had a computer that he could use to mix music, and he purchased other equipment such as a microphone so that he could start experimenting with music.
This is the moment that JJ realised he wanted to take things seriously, he just didn’t know how.
JJ mixed a couple songs himself but in all honesty, he felt that his ability wasn’t there at the time, even though it sounded good.
He then knew that it was time to get focussed and start perfecting his craft.
JJ realised his mixing wasn’t the best and he wanted that industry standard sound so he went looking for people who can mix music. Around June 2020 JJ got into contact with Tom Maflin (ProdbyTom) who is a locally based producer who said he could mix and master JJ’s vocals for him which helped him get a beat.
JJ then moved forward and created a song called ‘My Time’ and sent Tom everything he needed to mix it together.
JJ said:
“Once I heard it back that’s when I knew I really wanted to put my all into music and that’s when we put the song out. That song got me my first radio play on FlexFm with DJ Madfingers which became my biggest achievement at the time and shortly after that it was played on BBC Hereford & Worcester Introducing with Andrew Marston. A huge achievement!”
JJ added:
“During the next few months I would continue recording music while Tom would mix and master it and each song that was made would be played on BBC Hereford & Worcester with Andrew Marston.”
JJ then started working with an up and coming management company from Swindon where he would end up recording his first music video for a song called ‘Real Ones’ which was then played on various radio stations such as Pie Radio, BBC Hereford & Worcester with Andrew Marston and BBC Asian Network with DJ Limelight and DJ Kan D Man.
JJ would continue to create more music videos with the guys from Swindon and the last one they made together ‘Dark Days’ would go onto be played on BBC 1Xtra during the daytime radio show with Nick Bright.
This wasn’t his only time on BBC 1Xtra. Shortly after JJ’s first play, he would be played on the station again with a song called ‘Complicated’ which DJ Target decided to play on his ‘Homegrown Talent Show’. Another fantastic achievement for the growing talent of JJ Denny.
JJ then continued releasing new music and started posting on TikTok which has helped him reach a wider audience with songs such as ‘True Colours’ being played more than 50,000 times Spotify and SoundCloud.
The rise hasn’t stopped there. JJ Denny is now signed up under management with One Fiinix Live Agency (Ed Sheeran, Big Boi, Years & Years) and he has managed to secure his first play on BBC Radio 1 with Jess Iszatt with his song ‘Heart On My Sleeve’.
JJ has another song that will be released on the 29th December called ‘Think Of Me’ which you can pre-save now.
JJ Denny plans to perform live in 2024 and we think this could be his biggest year yet! What an incredible young Herefordian!
