Herefordshire Libraries are calling all would-be astronauts to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
Exclusive Space Chase kit bags are available to the first children who sign up to the challenge at all Herefordshire libraries on Saturday 13 July.
The Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge 2019 is an out-of-this-world adventure which encourages children up to the age of 12 to read six library books over the school summer holidays. Their mission will be to join the Rockets, a super space family, to track down books pinched by mischievous aliens! As children read their books, they will collect special stickers (including some stinky ones) to complete their mission folder and receive rewards. Any book from Herefordshire Libraries can be read for the challenge – from fiction to fact books, eBooks to poetry.
Why is the Summer Reading Challenge important?
Children’s reading can ‘dip’ over the summer if they don’t have access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure, and this can have a negative impact on their work once they return to school. Last year in the West Midlands 44,658 children took part in the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge.
Summer Reading Challenge activities
While visiting the library, children can take part in the ‘Design a Space Alien’ art competition. A bumper pack of art materials is up for grabs, with paper and drawing materials available at each library. Competition artwork will be displayed across all Herefordshire library sites, and the winner will be announced in October.
Children can also take part in the Space Chase treasure hunt where they can explore the library to find the hidden aliens. Successful hunters can enter a prize draw to win a giant craft box.
There’s plenty more to keep the kids entertained over the summer, with an illustrator workshop, craft activity sessions and even a pop-up planetarium! All families need to do is visit their local library – and you don’t need to be a library member to join in!
The Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019 will prepare for lift off across all Herefordshire libraries on Saturday 13 July.
