Specialist 4×4 vehicles designed to improve police capability in rural areas are now serving West Mercia’s communities.

One‑third of West Mercia’s population lives in a rural area, and the force covers 8,451 farms – more than double the second‑highest total in Lincolnshire. The two new 4x4s, which have been funded by PCC John Campion, will support the rural crime team working across the force.

With off‑road capability, the vehicles will help officers access areas that standard police cars struggle with, including bridleways, farm tracks, uneven ground and locations where road conditions can slow or prevent a quick response.

This investment is another step forward in delivering a key priority within the PCC’s Safer Communities Plan: supporting rural communities to be safe and feel safe.

Recent progress includes the rollout of rural‑crime training for call handlers – delivered in partnership with the NFU following feedback from the farming community – and continued funding for five Rural and Business Officers.

PCC John Campion said: “With West Mercia Police covering the fourth‑largest geographical policing area in England and Wales, the mix of urban and rural landscapes presents unique challenges.

“I have seen first‑hand the work of officers in our rural communities and the difficulties they face when trying to access isolated areas which can be uniquely affected by some types of crime. I am pleased to provide these two vehicles that will make a meaningful difference to the service local communities receive, and how officers go about delivering that.”

Chief Constable of West Mercia Police Richard Cooper said: “I am pleased to receive two new 4×4 vehicles into our fleet, which will play a vital role in supporting our officers as they serve communities across the West Mercia Police force area.

“Policing such a large and diverse geographical area brings unique challenges, particularly in our rural locations, and these vehicles will help ensure officers can respond quickly and effectively, whatever the terrain or weather.

“We welcome this investment which strengthens our ability to provide a visible and reliable police presence for our rural communities and reflects our continued commitment to keeping people safe wherever they live.”
