On Thursday 23 April, Stefan Ramsden was handed a 10-year extended sentence during a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court for subjecting his then-partner to a campaign of domestic abuse and violence which spanned an 18-month period.
The 34-year-old from Newport had previously pleaded guilty to threats to kill, coercive and controlling behaviour and witness intimidation on the first day of their trial.
At the sentence hearing, the court heard how during one incident, Ramsden repeatedly punched the victim to their face while he was driving down the M4, as well as threatening to kill them both by crashing the car.
On another occasion, he threatened the victim with a homemade blow torch, before assaulting them and causing extensive damage to their property. The abuse came to the attention of police in May 2025 and resulted in Ramsden’s arrest.
DC Hannah Murray, the officer in charge said: “The level of violence, abuse and psychological manipulation Stefan Ramsden subjected his victim to, over a prolonged period, is abhorrent and I’m grateful that the judge saw fit to pass an extended sentence in this case.
“While the sentence cannot make up for the what the victim had to endure, I hope it provides them with some sense of justice and closure so they can start to rebuild their life again. I also want to thank the victim for their courage and bravery in reporting this to the police. They conducted themselves with nothing but dignity and strength throughout this investigation.
“We are committed to tackling all forms of domestic abuse and violence so if you, or someone you know, is experiencing this, please don’t suffer in silence, report it to us.”
Stefan Ramsden was sentenced to five years in prison, with an extended licence period of five years. He also received an indefinite restraining order not to contact his ex-partner.
