PSA testing isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and it’s not routinely offered to all men in the UK. But it might be worth considering if:
✅ You’re over 45 (or over 40 with a family history of prostate cancer)
✅ You’re of African or Caribbean descent (as prostate cancer risk is higher)
✅ You’ve noticed changes in your urination(going more often, difficulty going, or blood in your urine)
PSA tests aren’t perfect—they don’t always mean cancer is present, and sometimes they pick up cancers that don’t need treatment. That’s why it’s a good idea to chat with a healthcare professional to decide if a test is right for you.
A PSA test is a simple blood test that checks the level of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood. Sometimes, higher PSA levels can be a sign of prostate cancer, but they can also be caused by other, non-cancerous conditions.
Like any test, it has its pros and cons, so it’s good to know what to expect:
✅ Potential Benefits: It can help spot prostate issues early, giving you a chance to discuss next steps with a healthcare professional.
⚠️ Things to Consider: PSA tests aren’t always 100% accurate. A high PSA level doesn’t always mean cancer, and some cancers don’t raise PSA levels at all. This means it can sometimes lead to unnecessary worry, extra tests, or even treatment that might not be needed.
If you’re unsure whether a PSA test is right for you, it’s always a good idea to have a chat with your GP.
