The Hereford Sea Cadets proudly hosted a special commemorative dinner to honour the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. The event took place at the Cider Orchard Restaurant, Herefordshire College, and brought together a gathering of dignitaries, veterans, cadets, and volunteers to reflect on the historical significance of VE Day.
Among those in attendance were His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Mr. Edward Harley, CBE, and Captain Neil Downing RD RN, the Captain of the Sea Cadet Corps. The evening was enriched by the presence of veterans from HMS Antelope including Captain Nicholas Tobin DSC MA RN, which TS Antelope is affiliated with, along with senior Sea Cadet Officers, uniformed staff, trustees, and most importantly, the dedicated cadets who are the heart of the organisation.
The formal military-style dinner featured thoughtful speeches and toasts that paid tribute to the sacrifices made during World War II. The cadets and guests enjoyed a carefully curated menu, designed and prepared by the students from Herefordshire College, making for a truly memorable dining experience. This partnership not only highlighted the significance of the occasion but also provided the students with invaluable practical experience in event catering.
Commanding Officer, Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Emma Drew RNR, expressed her gratitude for the event, stating, “It was a wonderful evening, and the food was sublime. The dinner provided a meaningful opportunity to honour and remember the sacrifices made during World War II. It raised awareness among attendees, particularly the younger cadets and catering students, about the importance of VE Day and its lasting impact, thereby instilling values of patriotism and respect for history.”

Sub Lieutenant Drew further emphasised the event’s dual focus on education and community engagement: “The collaboration with Herefordshire College provided the Hospitality and Catering students with a wonderful experience in event catering, supporting local educational initiatives and strengthening ties within the community. This dinner was not just a celebration; it was a powerful educational and community-building experience.”
As the evening drew to a close, guests and catering students joyfully waved the Union Flag to Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and the National Anthem. All attendees left with a renewed appreciation for the sacrifices of the past and the importance of preserving history for future generations. A special thanks and gratitude go to The Hedley Foundation for sponsoring this event.
