Parents will find out today which secondary school their child will attend in September.

Parents in Herefordshire join those across England today (Monday 3 March) in finding out which secondary school their child will be attending in September 2025.

Herefordshire Council has made 1763 offers of places in schools across the county compared to 1827 in 2024, with the following parental preference success rates:

First preference: 1631 offers, which is 92.5% of the total offers

Second preference: 96 offers, which is 5.4% of the total offers with a cumulative success rate of 98%

Third preference: 10 offers, which is 0.56% of the total offers with a cumulative success rate of 98.5%

This year saw an increase in the numbers of parents getting a school in one of their three preferences (98.5% compared to 97.9% in 2024).

The remaining 26 places offered (1.4%), were to parents whose preferences could not be met and their offer was for the nearest school to their home address with available spaces.

In previous years, Herefordshire schools were a net importer of pupils, with more pupils from neighbouring counties requesting places in the county’s schools than Herefordshire pupils requesting places in other counties. This year Herefordshire offered 145 places to out of county children and neighbouring counties offered 107 places to Herefordshire children.

As of today’s date, there are 7 Herefordshire secondary schools with waiting lists and 6 have available spaces, the remaining schools have exceeded their published admission number (PAN) and have no waiting list.
15 known pupils who did not apply for a school place will be allocated a place at the nearest school to their home address with spaces at the end of March.

The council has continued to promote its online application service to parents again this year and 94.1% applied online compared to 95.1% last year.
