Press release from St Michael’s Hospice in Herefordshire:

St Michael’s Hospice is grateful for the news that they will receive in the coming weeks £166,000 of Government funding towards capital programmes, as a result of the lobbying from Hospice UK. The Government has pledged an investment of £100 million into hospices across England, with £25 million being allocated for immediate use.

This funding injection is being provided to help hospices modernise facilities and infrastructure, so future income received through community support can go directly towards funding patient care. We are giving careful consideration as to how best to utilise this money, including modernising facilities and ensuring our IT systems are fit for the future. There is growing importance on the use of digital platforms to deliver our care, so this funding will also be vital to growing our reach.

Matt Fellows, CEO of St Michael’s Hospice, said:

“We are thankful for this funding, which will enable us to carry out some meaningful improvements to our facilities, ensuring that patients and their families receive the highest standard of care in a comfortable and compassionate environment.

However, we still have a huge mountain to climb, as national insurance and cost of living increases will add another £600,000 to our costs next year. This means that we are as dependent as ever on our amazing community to keep supporting us.

Hospice care plays a vital role in our community, and we remain committed to working with our partners and supporters to secure sustainable, long-term funding solutions. Every pound invested in hospice care makes a real difference to the families who rely on our support.”

The government have given specific criteria on how hospices can utilise this funding. This includes the purchase of essential medical equipment, undertaking building refurbishments, upgrading family spaces, and implementing energy efficiency measures. Additionally, digital improvements will allow for better data sharing and expanded outreach services, ensuring that those who wish to receive palliative care in their own homes have access to the support they need.

At St Michael’s Hospice, we are dedicated to providing exceptional, person-centred care for patients and their families. The news of this funding will allow us to enhance our services and facilities, ensuring that everyone who turns to us for support receives the best possible care in their most challenging moments.

We would like to thank the Government for this investment and express our gratitude to our supporters, staff, and volunteers who make our work possible. We look forward to implementing these improvements and continuing to serve our community with the dignity, compassion, and excellence they deserve.
