Work has begun to restore the beloved former St Michaels College, in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire. The historic educational institution was originally built as a boys’ music school in 1856 by Oxford University Professor, Sir Frederick Ouseley.
After more than a decade of challenges, including closures, the school is ready to embark on a new chapter with an extensive refurbishment that will preserve its rich heritage while embracing modern educational practices.
The school is due to reopen as St Michael Abbey School in September this year. The new school will feature state-of-the-art facilities and contemporary study spaces designed to inspire and support today’s students.
The plans include:
Modern classrooms: Equipped with advanced technology and flexible furniture arrangements that facilitate collaborative learning and creativity.Â
Specialised learning spaces: Dedicated spaces for science, arts and technology that provide students with hands-on learning experiences.Â
Communal spaces: A newly designed library, recreation area, and multi-purpose hall that promote community engagement and foster a sense of belonging among students and families.Â
Outdoor learning zones: Enhancements to the school’s grounds, including gardens and outdoor sports facilities, to encourage environmental education and outdoor activities.Â
The refurbishment reflects St Michael Abbey School’s commitment to providing a safe, nurturing and innovative environment for all students. The school aims to blend its historic charm with modern functionality, creating a unique educational experience that prepares students for future success.
Robert Ford, Founding Headteacher of St Michael Abbey School said “This unique and innovative school will combine the best of British education with that of international education, making sure we have a model for young people to be skilled and qualified for this decade and the next, to face the challenges and opportunities of the future with confidence. As a Shropshire boy and someone with family across the Marches counties, mid Wales and the West Midlands, this really feels likes coming home and I am extremely proud to the Founding Headteacher of a school with a proud past and a bright future.”
Applications for the new academic year will open soon, welcoming prospective students and families to visit the new facilities and meet with staff.
