On Tuesday, October 8th, 708 pupils attended the Herefordshire School Games Values Festival, held at Hereford Leisure Centre! The Values Festival has been running for 4 years; designed to celebrate the values of the national programme.
Centred around the School Games values of respect, teamwork, passion, self-belief and determination, young people took part in different sports and activities, each one aimed at developing skills, confidence and giving young people a positive experience of sport and physical activity. Activities included golf, inclusive sports, athletics, tennis, team building and multi-skills, all supported by young leaders.
There were some brilliant examples of young people showing the values:
‘[I showed determination] because I had to keep going and never gave up!’
‘[I showed respect by] congratulating pupils from other schools’
‘[We showed teamwork] because we all worked together and cheered each other on’
The young leaders, who supported the activities, identified teams that demonstrated the values throughout the day. At each event, teams of young people were presented with individual medals and an award to take back to their school, based on the value they displayed.
Organised by Stride Active and Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and made possible with National Lottery and Sport England funding, the festival brought together 37 schools from across the county, supported by 96 young leaders from 6 local high schools.
Kieram Hallam, School Games Organiser in Herefordshire, said: “The Herefordshire Values Festival is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Herefordshire to represent their school and take part in different sporting activities. It’s a chance for them to explore and develop the values which they then can applyoutside of this experience.”
