Herefordshire Young Farmers are going to be celebrating the end of their 80th year of activities with a big event at Hereford Cathedral on Sunday 27th October 2024.

The Young Farmers movement started in Herefordshire in 1944 where it gave young people a chance to improve their skills in key farming duties such as looking after stock and hedge laying whilst also proving a much needed social scene for those in rural parts of the county to get together.

Thousands of people in Herefordshire have passed through the Young Farmers clubs and its reputation as a marriage bureau in times gone by have resulted in generations of families benefiting from its ability to connect people.

Past County Officers of Young Farmers in Herefordshire include Councillor Roger Phillips, the current chair of Herefordshire Council who counts his young farmers experience as a key grounding for his career in local government.

Members of the Young Farmers community past and present will celebrate their achievements from the past 80 years with a parade through Hereford’s High Town on Sunday 27th October gathering at the Hereford Bull Statue just before 2pm.

They will then progress down Broad Street before joining supporters from across Herefordshire for a service led by the Dean of Hereford Sarah Brown at 2.30pm.

The Cathedral service will celebrate everything that Young Farmers has meant to the community over the years with key participants taking part in performing speech, songs and poetry.

Following the service, attendees will be able to view the display of 8 tractors (one from every decade) outside the large West doors of the Cathedral, before moving to Hereford Town Hall for tea and cake.

The organisers would love to get as many people with a connection to Young Farmers along to this celebration event.
