On Friday 10th November 2023, students and staff at The Hereford Academy came together for a Service of Remembrance, commemorating those who have lost their lives in wars and conflicts all over the world since the start of World War I.
The service at the school was led by the Senior Leadership Team, accompanied by Hereford Academy students who attend Cadets or other uniformed organisations in the community.
The Deputy Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Air Commodore Tim Howson DL, also attended the service to pay his respects and make the occasion even more special.
During the service, students heard the remarkable story of Flight Lieutenant David Lord VC DFC, a World War II Pilot, who courageously and selflessly sacrificed his lifein order to support a number of British troops on the ground.
Staff and Students from The Hereford Academy also read out the role of honour from the local St Martin’s Parish, naming the local people who died in conflict in World War I.
In the final act of remembrance at the service, the school’s Executive Prefects laid a wreath in honour of all those who have lost their lives, and the whole school marked the event by observing a two-minute silence at 11am.
Assistant Headteacher at The Hereford Academy, Mr Will Taylor, said:
“We are extremely proud of the key role that students played in the Remembrance service and this highlights the huge amount of respect and care that our young people embody.
“It is very important that young people are aware of the sacrifices made by so many and I have to say the whole service was very moving.
“We are grateful to Air Commodore Howson for attending the service and commemorating such an important event with our school family.”
