Hundreds of runners descended on Hereford for one of the city’s largest multi-distance running events.

In bright sunshine, more than 600 runners took part in Sunday’s RUN Hereford at the city’s Livestock Market, competing in either a 5K, 10K or Half Marathon.

Organised by St Michael’s Hospice, the event raised around £33,000 which will go towards the palliative and end-of-life care provided by the Bartestree-basedcharity, and towards support for patients’ loved ones.

At 80 years-old, Brian Symonds was the day’s oldest runner. The Wye Valley Runners member completed the 10K in just over an hour.

“I love taking part in RUN Hereford,” he said. “I’ve supported St Michael’s for years and always feel in safe hands handing money over to the Hospice.

“I only started running when I was 65 but I enjoy it so much. It’s so good for you.”

Sponsors Hereford Contract Canning entered into the spirit of the event with several team members running.

“Hereford Contract Canning would like to say well done to all runners who took part,” said HCC’s CEO, Julian Aitken.

“All runners did exceptionally well. This included our own team with one member coming top in their race category. We are incredibly proud to be the headline sponsor for RUN Hereford and look forward to working with St Michael’s Hospice Hereford to ensure the continued success of the event.”

The money raised through RUN Hereford will prove vital for the charity which relies on the community to raise the majority of its care costs.

“The sun certainly shone on us at RUN Hereford,” said Matt Ashcroft, the Hospice’s Events and Community Fundraising Manager.

“Each of the three distances were packed with Hospice supporters of all ages and abilities, helping raise thousands of pounds for St Michael’s. As well as the runners, I’d like to thank those who cheered them on, both out on the courses, and when they returned to Hereford Livestock Market. An event like this couldn’t take place without a significant number of marshals and volunteers, and the support of our sponsors, Hereford Contract Canning, so a huge thank you must go to them too.”
