Anglers from across the UK once again came to Hereford last week for the annual 2-Day Spring Festival.
Expectations were high after the River Wye’s recent excellent form, and once again it didn’t disappoint.
Fishing took place between the Victoria Bridge, and Broomy hill, with anglers fishing in 6 man zones for points.
Despite a wealth of international talent on display, it was Hereford Angler, Dave Roberts who came out on top.
Scoring a perfect 2 points, the 2 times Wye Champion put on a dazzling display on day one, by catching an incredible 215lb of mainly chub over the 5 hours, from a favoured swim above the Old Bridge.
Despite winning the match outright on day 1, Roberts who’s a professional angling guide on the River, had to back it up with a performance on day 2.
It was a tense affair as the first 2 hours of the match passed without a single fish being caught in his section. As the day warmed up, an odd fish started to show, and Roberts put together a fine display to net 26lb of Chub, Roach, and Perch to give him the all important section win.
No fewer than 5 anglers scored maximum points, but it was the weight advantage gained from day one that saw the Hereford man take the title.
2nd place went to North East visitor Steve Metcalfe and finishing 3rd was Coventry Tackle dealer James Robbins.
Over the 2 days the anglers averaged 29lb per angler, per day, proving once again that the Wye is the best Coarse Fishing River in the country.
The Festival was kindly sponsored by Italian Tackle giants Milo, and UK based Bait Company, Bait-Tech.
Spectators were treated to a tackle demonstration in the Hereford Rugby Club before enjoying a banquet at the Prize Presentation.
