West Mercia Police officers have provided an update after receiving calls from members of the public and motorists who have been concerned after seeing a person on a mobility scooter travelling along the A49 between Hereford and Leominster.
An update shared by West Mercia Police earlier said:
“We have been receiving reports about a mobility scooter that regularly travels along the A49 Leominster to Hereford. The reports have mainly been concerns about the safety of the driver travelling along such a busy route and belief that a mobility scooter is not allowed to travel on a road.
“We have looked into this further and there are two classes of mobility scooter.
“Class 2: these cannot be used on the road (except where there is not a pavement) and have a maximum speed of 4mph.
“Class 3: Â these can be used on the road and have a maximum speed of 4mph off the road and 8mph on the road. They must be registered, and the driver has to be 14 years of age or over.
“You can only drive on the road in a class 3 mobility scooter. The maximum speed is 8mph.
“You cannot drive on bus lanes, ‘cycle only’ lanes or motorways. Avoid using dual carriageways with a speed limit of over 50mph.
“You must use an amber flashing light for visibility if you use a class 3 mobility scooter on a dual carriageway.
“You must follow the Highway Code if you drive your mobility scooter on the road.
“The mobility scooter that we have been receiving reports about is in fact a class 3 and therefore allowed to drive on the road including the A49.”
