A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that coincides with the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth, meaning that the moon appears larger than usual in the night sky.

Local photographer Andy Compton captured this stunning photo of the moon last night (August 10th) rising above Hereford, Herefordshire, into the ‘Waxing Gibbous phase’. This is when the moon is more than 50% illuminated but not a Full Moon.

Tonight (August 11th) look southeast at sunset to catch a glimpse of the Sturgeon Moon rising. (Supermoon)
