What better way to spend a leisurely Sunday than discovering one of the NGS Herefordshire’s beautiful Herefordshire gardens that kindly open for charity?
This Sunday 10th April sees no less than three very special places opening their gates.
LOWER HOPE is always a treat, with its butterflies in the hot house, exotic plants and the Mediterranean, Italian and Japanese gardens. From the lime tree avenue, you reach a tranquil lake, landscaped with wild flowers and bulbs. Water plays a large feature throughout the whole garden – natural streams and man-made waterfalls – and prizewinning Hereford cattle and Suffolk sheep graze in the surrounding fields. 5 miles south of Bromyard, it’s open 2-5pm – you can pre-book online or pay at the gate (cash only). BURY COURT FARMHOUSE is open 2-5pm. This charming Wigmore garden, not far from Leominster, is brimming with bulbs and glorious spring colour. The old courtyard has a pond and fruit trees, with steps up to a terrace leading onto a lawn and the veggie plot. Mixed borders, wildlife areas and a mini orchard await you in the semi-walled main garden. Full details: https://findagarden.ngs.org.uk/…/bury-court-farmhouse
THE PICTON GARDEN nestles on the lower slopes of the Malvern Hills. Open 11am-5pm for the National Garden Scheme this Sunday, this renowned garden has something different around every corner. In the woodland areas there are now a multitude of unusual plants, including epimediums (sometimes known as fairy wings or bishop’s hat!) and more than 100 different ferns and acers. There is also a growing collection of historic daffodils (pre-1930). The Picton garden is part of the family-run Old Court Nurseries in Colwall, which has specialised in Michaelmas daisies since 1906 and holds the Plant Heritage National Collection of over 430 varieties.
