Campaign group, ‘Save The Wye’ say that they are dismayed by the actions of two local Conservative MPs in Herefordshire, who failed to vote to support actions to prevent raw sewage from being discharged into rivers.
A spokesperson for Save The Wye said:
“We are dismayed that all four Tory MPs whose constituencies embrace The Wye, from the source to the Severn, failed to vote in favour of the Lords amendment 45 to the Environment Bill which would have placed a legal duty on water companies in England and Wales to make improvements to their sewerage systems and demonstrate progressive reductions in the harm caused by discharges of untreated sewage.
“By failing to protect The Wye, our local MPs – Jesse Norman, Bill Wiggins and Fay Jones – are failing their Herefordshire and Powys constituents who have made it clear that they want the river and its tributaries to be cleaned up urgently.
“Our elected representatives know full well that the river is in danger, but when it comes down to it they simply will not take action. They are guilty of sitting on their hands while our precious river dies in front of their eyes.”
