The furlough scheme will be extended until the end of March, the chancellor has announced this afternoon.

Rishi Sunak made the announcement in a statement to MPs in the Commons, telling them that the payments would remain at 80% of people’s wages.

He told the Commons that the government will review the policy in January.

It follows several days of questioning over the duration of furlough. It was due to end on 31 October but has been extended to cover the new four-week lockdown in England.

The scheme has been a lifeline for many employers and employees and will be a major boost as we approach Christmas and the new year.
