Prime Minister Boris Johnson will tell ministers today that the upcoming month long lockdown in England is time limited, as concerns rise in the cabinet that a rebellion is growing.
Growing numbers of senior Conservative backbenchers have signalled their opposition to the measures due to come into effect on Thursday, with Mr Johnson set to tell ministers that there was ‘no alternative’ but to impose national measures, with considerable concern that daily deaths could have reached 2,000 – 3,000 per day without any national measures being put in place.
The Prime Minister will be keen to get his party on side, especially after Michael Gove told the press yesterday that the lockdown in England could be extended to Christmas or beyond, something that the Prime Minister has since denied.
Despite advice in September from medical experts that a circuit breaker lockdown was needed, Mr Johnson decided to continue to focus on a local approach, something which he continues to defend, despite Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer suggesting that the country should’ve entered a circuit breaker lockdown prior to the half term break in October.
