Michael Gove has confirmed this morning that the government is set to put a pause on the return of fans to sporting events, due to a significant rise in new coronavirus cases across the United Kingdom.

Mr Gove told BBC Breakfast that the government are, “Looking at how we can pause that programme”. A limited number of fans were due to be allowed back to sporting venues from 1st October.

The news is set to be a major setback for clubs such as Hereford FC, who simply need paying spectators to make the running of the business viable. It’s unknown whether these plans will affect clubs further down the football pyramid. Clubs below the National League level have been allowed to admit a small number of supporters at each game, as long as a track and trace system is in place.
