Jesse Norman has joined the increasing number of people in Government and the wider community that are against plans revealed by twelve of Europe’s largest football clubs to create a breakaway European Super League.

Jesse Norman, MP for Hereford and Herefordshire South said:

“Delighted the PM has put the boot in to proposals for a “European Super League”. It is a shambles of an idea, bad for fans, bad for competition, rotten for other clubs, rotten for the game.”

It comes as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham announced on Sunday evening that they have linked up with six European clubs to create a European Super League, which will become a rival competition to the Champions League.

The news hasn’t gone down well across the football world, with Liverpool fans putting up banners outside Anfield and even travelling to Elland Road in Leeds yesterday evening to hold a protest outside the ground prior to Liverpool’s match with Leeds United.

Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both criticised the plans, with Neville calling the plans a ‘criminal act’ against the sport and Liverpool midfielder James Milner even said that he hopes that the plans for a European Super League don’t go ahead.
