Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Chief Medical Officers Chris Whitty will host a press conference at 6pm this evening to set out the new three tier lockdown system.

Cities such as Liverpool and Manchester, that have seen a recent surge in cases are expected to be placed under the strictest measures, with hospitality expected to be forced to close, whilst areas such as Herefordshire are expected to remain under the current guidelines, that include the rule of six and hospitality venues and takeaways closing at 10pm.

There has been a backlash from the mayors of northern cities who say that the financial support offered by the government doesn’t come close to what they will need.

Culture Secretary told Sky News this morning that it is “not the government’s plan to return to full lockdown and we hope to have the pandemic under control by Christmas.”

Tier 3 restrictions are expected to see pubs, bars, cafes, gyms, beauty salons and hairdressers closed, but it will fall short of full lockdown like in March as educational settings and places of worship will remain open.

Tier 2 restrictions are expected to see stricter measures on household mixing, with a ban on meeting indoors expected to be put in place in areas under this level of restriction.

Tier 1 restrictions are expected to have to follow the current guidelines. Those include the rule of six and hospitality venues and takeaway outlets closing at 10pm.
